The following is a Warden Message issued by the Consulate General of the United States of America in Guayaquil. The following message contains all of the information available. Please share it with the American citizens on your warden list, and any other Americans you know, as soon as possible. It should be disseminated as widely as possible within the American citizen community. Please contact the American Citizen Services section via e-mail (acsguayaquil@state.gov), fax 232-0904, or telephone 232-3570 if you have any questions. Thank you very much for your support and assistance.
The below message is a follow-up on the December 2007 Warden Message regarding the Teleferico, which can be viewed at: http://ecuador.usembassy.gov/uploads/M

In light of an additional sexual assault taking place on Volcano Pichincha on June 13, 2008, the U.S. Embassy Ecuador strongly recommends that all American citizens visiting or resident in Ecuador avoid using the hiking paths that lead from the Teleferico along the Volcano Pichincha in Quito. Sexual and armed assaults continue to be committed against foreign tourists. Over the past six months, six separate sexual assaults, as well as numerous armed robberies, have been reported on the pathways accessible from the Teleferico. Assaults have occurred when people have been traveling in groups and at all times of the day. The perpetrators are still at large. Visitors to the Teleferico should not stray from the immediate vicinity of the Teleferico viewing terraces and facilities.
The U.S. Embassy Ecuador will distribute an additional Warden Message should the situation change.
