New Center for Emergency Operations Inaugurated in Guayaquil
December 19, 2007
Ambassador Linda Jewell officially inaugurated in Guayaquil a Center for Emergency Operations built with financing from the U.S. Government at a cost of 600,000 dollars. Managed by Guayaquil’s Civil Defense, the center will assist in efficiently coordinating resources and disaster prevention activities with four other centers located in Quito, Cuenca, Coca, and Galapagos Islands. In the event of natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, floods, earthquakes, etc. these centers will become the backbone of the disaster relief response nationwide, thus mitigating their effects on the Ecuadorian population.
The center is a reality thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Humanitarian Aid Program, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Government of Ecuador through its Minister of Civil Defense, and the contribution of the Guayaquil Municipality that donated the land for its construction.
