As part of our continuing commitment to promoting cultural exchange, the U.S. Embassy in Quito and the Consulate General in Guayaquil recently sponsored a series of concerts by AFAR, an American hip-hop group. In addition to performing live in various Ecuadorian cities, the group also taught music classes in Guayaquil and Quito.
"AFAR" is a hip-hop fusion group that weaves elements of jazz, R&B and gospel music into its songs. The group uses live music, unity and education to break free of the ways in which hip-hop is traditionally defined. The U.S. State Department selected AFAR as world ambassadors of American music through a program that is carried out jointly with the Lincoln Center and The Rhythm Road program. This is the second time that AFAR members Demoterious Lawrence, Jason Berry, Mark Baldwin and Che Marshall are representing the United States in an international musical tour.
