The English Language Department of Universidad Católica (UCSG) invited Public affairs Officer Peter Martin to participate as member of the jury for its spelling bee contest. During his introductory speech, the American diplomat encouraged the 12 young participants, who you came from 6 different public and private schools, to continue studying English and perfecting their spelling, drawing on his personal experiences in this activity, which is very common in the United States.
“In this increasingly globalized world, we much more have contact with each other via the Internet, in which we write more and speak less. So we show who we are to other people by how we write. In my opinion, this means that it is more and more important to know how to communicate well in writing. I can guarantee you that the attention that you give now to learning proper spelling is going to benefit you in the future”, Mr. Martin told the students.
