Clearing the Way towards a Mine-Free Ecuador

July 11, 2007

In the next few days, the United States and the Government of Ecuador will move into Morona Santiago province a de-mining operation machine called “Tempest MK6” to  safely remove mines from the border between Ecuador and Peru. Ambassador Jewell acted as a representative of the Organization of American States and was present as the de-mining equipment was unloaded from ships in the port of Guayaquil.  The equipment will soon be moved Morona Santiago province to be used by the Ecuadorian and international personnel.   With the cooperation of the United States, Ecuador made some important advances in their de-mining program.  The Department of State of the United States has sent American military personnel to train more than 600 Ecuadorians in the basic techniques of mine-clearing.
