Immigrant Visa Categories

An Immigrant Visa Category describes the relationship between the petitioner and the applicant seeking to immigrate to the United States.

In order to qualify for immigration to the U.S. an applicant must be petitioned by a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident. Depending on whether the petitioner is a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident, that person must have a qualifying familial or employment relationship with the applicant (see Immigrant Visa Categories below). Former Legal Permanent Residents who lost their residency for reasons beyond their control may also qualify for immigration. Alternatively, a person may qualify for immigration to the U.S. by being selected in the Diversity Visa Lottery. To find out more about the Diversity Visa Lottery click here.

Some Immigrant Visa Categories do not qualify for an Immigrant Visa until their "Priority Date" has become current. To find out more about Priority Dates as well as what the current priority dates are click here.

Below are listed the most common Immigrant Visa Categories. To find out additional Immigrant Visa Categories visit the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website at http://uscis.gov.

- New Security Procedures -

The Consular Section is implementing new security procedures to speed interview processing.  In order to minimize the amount of time applicants have to wait in line before their interview; the American Consulate General will prohibit applicants from entering the building with anything other than the documents they need for their application.

Applicants should make arrangements before coming to the American Consulate General, so that the only things they have with them when they arrive are their documents. Purses, bags, suitcases, backpacks, etc. will no longer be permitted.

Limited baby supplies will still be admitted.
