Non-Immigrant Visas

General Information

There are two main types of visas, Immigrant Visas and Non-Immigrant Visas. An Immigrant Visa allows a person to live, study and work in the U.S. indefinitely as a resident. To find out more about Immigrant Visas click here.  Different categories of Non-Immigrant visas allow the bearer to visit the United States temporarily for business, tourism, studies, or to work.

Non-Immigrant Visas

To apply for a Non-Immigrant visa, all applicants, regardless of age, must pay a $131 visa fee and have a valid passport (the passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of the visa interview). Since a Non-Immigrant visa requires that the stay in the U.S. be temporary, the applicant must prove that he or she does not intend to stay in the U.S. indefinitely.

If the applicant lives in any other province or region of Ecuador, he or she must apply for a Non-Immigrant visa at the U.S. Embassy in Quito. Only residents of Ecuador should apply for a non-immigrant visa in Ecuador. Residents of other countries, even if they are Ecuadorian citizens, should apply in their country of residence.

- New Security Procedures -

The Consular Section is implementing new security procedures to speed interview processing.  In order to minimize the amount of time applicants have to wait in line before their interview; the American Consulate General will prohibit applicants from entering the building with anything other than the documents they need for their application.

Applicants should make arrangements before coming to the American Consulate General, so that the only things they have with them when they arrive are their documents. Purses, bags, suitcases, backpacks, etc. will no longer be permitted.

Limited baby supplies will still be admitted.
