The U.S. Consulate delivered more than 1,100 lbs. of food to the Mujeres de Lucha cooking project to help the women’s group meet the needs of their community during the Christmas season. Located in a predominantly Afro-Ecuadorian neighborhood in Guayaquil, Mujeres de Lucha was created to provide inexpensive, nutritious lunches to approximately 180 local children, disabled persons and elderly community members of the Cristo de Consuelo neighborhood per day. The project’s efforts supplement the daily meals that the children get at home, improving health and nutrition and offering indirect economic assistance to low-income families.
The donation was the result of a food drive organized by the Consulate staff. Consulate employees responded energetically, engaging in a friendly competition to see which office could contribute the most, bringing everything from crates of bananas to sacks of rice.
An American Peace Corps Volunteer has also been working with the Mujeres de Lucha project for the past four months, offering much needed training and organizational support.
