Warden Message 2009-08

March 26, 2009

The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General in Ecuador wish to inform American citizens visiting or resident in Ecuador of recent changes to electoral procedures with regard to foreign residents in Ecuador.

In accordance with Article 63 of the Ecuadorian Constitution, foreigners of age 16 or more who have resided in Ecuador for a period of at least five years may vote in local and national elections. However, voting is not compulsory for foreign residents in Ecuador.  Voting in foreign elections is allowed under U.S. law and does not adversely affect U.S. citizenship.
If you would like to learn more about the Ecuadorian electoral process, you may go to the National Electoral Council website (Consejo Nacional Electoral): www.cne.gov.ec/
